点评:When making our plans last year, to vacation in Thailand in early 2025, we definitely wanted to include seeing some parts of Thailand we hadn't had a chance to explore on any of our previous visits. And doing that on bicycles was the idea right away, as we are not only Dutch and therefore cycle every day anyway :-), but also as we have some experience with discovering new places on the bike and really liked it!
The internet search for someone who organizes such trips in Thailand quickly led us to ACT, as they offer exactly what we were looking for: A fun trip with some serious riding but also enough room for excursions, lots of nature and interesting places to visit, plus time to relax and staying at nice hotels – we consider ourselves too old for the backpacker experience of camping or staying at hostels...
So we got in touch with Christopher at ACT and exchanged quite a few emails on what he was offering and on what we would like – with great results: the 4-day trip on the website was adapted to a 5-day trip and the bikes were set up exactly the way we wanted it, including an electric bike for my wife ;-)
When we arrived in Bangkok, Christopher was already waiting for us at the airport and he drove us to our hotel in Hua Hin, to recover from our jet-lag in luxury...
We started our 5-day trip by fitting helmets and trying the bikes at the ACT headquarters close to our hotel, and then had a first quite relaxed kick-off of our adventure by cycling all around Hua Hin, seeing some parts that we had never been to in any of our previous stays in Hua Hin, rounded off by a very nice dinner with Christopher and his lovely partner Gae.
The next day we really headed off then, packing enough stuff for four days in smaller bags while leaving the bigger suitcases at ACT headquarters. Tim, who was going to drive the van following us on our trip, packed our stuff away, loaded a huge amount of fruit as well, provided us with fresh drinking water in our bidons, and off we went! Christopher up front, just the two of us behind, and Tim at the back in the van. The van featured notices on the back, alerting faster vehicles coming up from behind to our presence, . As there aren't that many cyclists to be found on these roads,
I can't start to describe all the sights we saw and roads we traveled, but we stopped every couple of hours for fruit and water, and/or for coffee or lunch, mostly at interesting places we could explore.
This second day, now venturing away from Hua Hin, was some 55 kilometers, quite easy – actually the whole trip was mostly flat and with tail-wind - but we missed the afternoon excursion to Tham Phraya Nakhon Cave, the famous cave with the temple, as my wife was not feeling very well.
We stayed in a hotel in Dolphin Bay, featuring a nice pool and great breakfast, but a bit basic compared to the other places we stayed at.
The second and third days were a bit more challenging with almost 80 kilometers each, but again interspersed with stops for fruit and/or seeing interesting places and wildlife – cute monkeys! We stayed at really nice hotels, enjoyed great food be it for breakfast, lunch or dinner which we enjoyed together with Christopher and Tim. And we had a blast cycling through rural Thailand! Lots of beach roads, coconut, pineapple or rubber plantations, lots of beautiful nature of course...
The last day was a shorter ride again, some 50 kilometers. Riding along the beach with a lot of wind and waves, more than we – or Christopher for that matter– had ever seen before on this coast... Usually the sea is completely flat around here. Lots to see again, including taking a lot of steps up to a huge temple in the middle of nowhere..
As we had ventured quite a long stretch away from Hua Hin at this point – some 160 kilometers by direct road – we climbed in the van after lunch and headed back to ACT headquarters.
All in all, a great and memorable 5 days with Christopher and Tim – but that wasn't all! As we had missed the excursion to the cave with the temple, we were invited – at no extra cost – to do that excursion with Gae, his partner. So we headed out in the van driven by Tim again, cycled some 20 kilometers to a beach near the cave, where we took a longtail boat for a short ride to the base of the mountain in which this cave is hidden. We had to climb and descend hundreds and hundreds of steps to get there- but it was certainly worth it! This awesome cave called Tham Phraya Nakhon Cave is truly unbelievable in terms of size, stalagmites and stalactites galore, and then this temple right in the middle....
So – hundreds of steps again, a quick boat ride and then a lovely lunch with Gae and Tim right on the beach. What a lovely way to conclude our ACT adventures!
