点评：We visited on 22nd of March and had a lovely time. Starting with a nice welcome in the ticket office we then had lunch in the cafe. I had a lovely pulled pork bap followed by a slab of coffee and walnut cake while my wife was pleased with her broccoli and stilton soup and very impressed with her cheese scone. We then wandered around the gardens and enjoyed the wibbly wobbly hedge which is not to be underestimated. Unfortunately having noticed there were quite a few dogs in the cafe we also noticed a dog poo on the path to the picnic area. There are lovely grounds to walk dogs at Montacute but their owners must show more responsibilty. Having pre-booked our tickets for a 2.45pm visit to the house we were excited about what to expect. Please don't be excited....it is nothing special and in fact very underwhelming. Unfortunately there is no access beyond the ground floor at the moment due to restoration work. The highlight of the visit to the house was peering out of the windows at the wibbly wobbly hedge and seeing faces in it as so kindly pointed out by the lovely lady who greeted us at the door. She also added substance to the story of the theft of some of the paintings in 1961 which mysteriously turned up at Temple Meads station ten years later in a left luggage locker. The fact that some of the paintings are Gainsborough portraits only adds to the intrigue. Don't miss out on the Ice House which was capable of storing ice for up to 2 years in times gone by. Apparently Montacute House has been used for many TV and film productions including Wolf Hall and Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. When you visit you will see why. We will certainly come again possibly in the summer and definitely when there is access to the upper floors.
