Animals were great, but the zoo let itself (and us) down with other aspects being negative.

点评：The zoo is walkable from Basel centre, with some signs along the way. Cashier charged us the wrong admission price initially and was abrupt when we questioned our payment being taken. Decent food from the first cafe you reach near the entrance - one pizza was enough for two to share, and the staff were friendly.
The zoo was fairly straightforward to walk around, although the map was poor/unhelpful and didn’t make it clear what animals there were. It was unsatisfactory that none of the information about any of the animals had been translated into English, thus excluding many of the English-speaking visitors. Disappointed that we didn’t see the kangaroos or giraffes. Some of the best animals we saw were: elephants, lionesses, rhinos, otters, monkeys, cheetahs, and a bonus of red squirrels. Our favourite bit was seeing a family of snow leopards, usually elusive but in full view, so that was a real highlight!
I felt that some of the enclosures did not seem spacious enough for the animals. Some of the other visitors were inconsiderate, pushing in front to block our views and lots of children running around and shouting/screaming, which is inappropriate behaviour for a zoo environment where the animals need quiet. The zoo was open until 6pm but none of the paths were lit, so when it started getting dark (late October), this was an issue. We were also very disappointed that upon entering the shop at 5:45pm (15 minutes before the zoo shut), a staff member said “ferme” in an abrupt manner, to indicate the shop was closed! Ridiculous that this was done 15 minutes early and there was no information to explain this. Very disappointed that we came away without a souvenir from our visit, and it left a sour taste. A very poor way to treat visitors and suggests staff want to go home early and aren’t bothered about leaving a positive lasting impression on guests.
