点评:PROS
* The important and famous symbol of the British royalty
* One of the most famous buildings
* The location of that grand and famous balcony where the royal family greets we commoners
* Tours inside are possible, but quite expensive
CONS
* Most people will only see the outside of the building
* It is always crowded and congested there with people congregate outside the big iron gates, especially for the (often and almost daily) Changing of the Guard ceremony
* There is often not much going on inside the parade grounds
* Tours inside are expensive and only certain times of the year
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... because I'm drawn to be here on every visit to London, and this time was no different.
I arrived via the Green Park tube station and briefly visit the Canada Memorial and then walked around the Canada Gate and onto the traffic circle in front of the building and has the Queen Victoria Memorial at its center.
There isn't much to do there other than walk around, look at the famous but otherwise unimpressive large building, steer clear of traffic, avoid the many others doing the same thing or go to the Victoria Memorial which is directly opposite.
... and here is a repeat of my history with Buckingham Palace:
During my previous visit in 1978, I told the guard inside the gate on the right side that I had traveled from the United States in order to "sign the Queen's guest book" and then was duly escorted into the front paved parade grounds of the palace property and into the front room (all the while under close supervision). It was fun then to be a young long haired and somewhat disheveled backpacking student and enter the Palace grounds while all the other tourists stood outside and watched me through the large iron gates as I entered Buckingham Palace through a main front door. Those were the days.... never to return....
Then in 2016, I presented myself to the policeman stationed inside that same gate that I had entered in 1978 and told him the same exact thing- that I had come from the U.S. to sign the Queen's guest book. He looked at me confused, so I explained what had happened in 1978 (probably before he was born). He responded that that's not done now.
In 2023 and 2024, I didn't even ask the guards about that anymore.
And by the way, I watched the Changing of the Guard from the street- much better and much more worthwhile and satisfying.
Here's what I did-
I have stood on The Mall on the St. James's Park side at the traffic light opposite the street going into St. James Palace.
From there, I watch the guards and marching band exit and they then turn right towards Buckingham Palace.
Then I, along with many others, run with them until reaching the Queen Victoria Memorial.
From there, take the pathway entrance on the left that descends into St. James's Park, a passageway that will take you below the street opposite Buckingham Palace. You come out on Spur Road and turn left into crowds on Birdcage Walk towards Wellington Barracks or wait there in Spur Road for another regiment of guards to march by.
Do not continue them on Spur Road back towards the palace- it’s packed there shoulder to shoulder
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Sure- standing on the street is free
WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Sure- as stated above, "a visit to London is not complete without doing that."
ADVICES
* Come and enjoy standing in front of this British royal palace
* Consider taking a tour if it's in season (expensive)
* Consider seeing the marchers on the street as I've described above rather than cramming for an hour crushed in front of the big black iron gates
* Consider watching Horse Guards Parade and the marching on the Mall rather than standing here for the Changing of the Guard ceremony
