点评:Pros:
- Service was friendly and efficient (free hotel transfers, welcoming guides and drinks/snacks afterwards)
- Horses were in reasonable body condition
- Horses were well shod on front feet and all hoofs looked to be in good condition
Cons
- Very little control over pace on the beach
- Horses appeared to have rainscald (it has been very hot and wet in Bali for the last month)
- Horses seemed uncomfortable with their gear (tongues consistently hanging out) and quite stiff
Our experience:
Hubby (riding weekly for one year) and I (riding for 20 years) went for a ride this morning and had an okay experience. There was a sign at reception which stated no galloping, controlled trot or canter only which seemed very reasonable to me. We popped our gear in a locker, were given helmets and went out to meet the horses.
It was evident to me that both horses were suffering from some rain scald and both had some redness to the skin, some areas with hair missing and my horse had rubbed out a fair bit of his mane. Poor itchy ponies! Bali has been hot and very rainy of late so there is a smidgen of understanding there, but I couldn’t see that there was any treatment given for this before or after our ride.
Regardless, we started off and it was clear to me that my horse was uncomfortable with his bit (tongue sticking out constantly) however he was quite responsive to my gentle guidance to move over (off the leg and gentle rein aides). As others have mentioned, much of the ride is along roads on the way to the beach and was at a walk. During this time I felt a general sense of stiffness in my horse and we had a few minor slips along the hard road.
Once at the beach my guide asked for my phone to take photos and he held onto it for the rest of the beach time. We walked to the end of the beach, at which point we were asked if we would like to ‘run’ and were told this would be one at a time. Given the sign mentioned earlier, I thought this would be a controlled trot or canter.
The guide suggested I follow him and took off at a speedy canter, filming the whole time and this quickly escalated into a gallop. I was asking my horse to ease up a bit however it was clear he was trained to use the guides horse as a measure of speed. Having been on rides in South Asia before, this behaviour didn’t really surprise me and with my riding experience I didn’t have any problems riding at this pace. That said, I imagine the lack of communication about the speed, and just jumping straight into it would take many other riders by surprise. There are also a lot of stones, river mouths and rubbish to navigate on the beach so that added to my slight concern. When I whipped my head around I saw that hubby was actually right behind us and was thankfully managing his incredibly speedy ride (thank goodness for the lessons he’s been having!). He was a bit shocked by the pace but proud to have stayed on.
The rest of the ride was much the same, walking back to the end of the beach and then hooning along at a fairly uncontrollable rate. I suggested we just trot or slow canter down the beach, however this didn’t seem to be acknowledged. The ride back to the stables was mostly uneventful, and once back at the stables we were sat down with cold towels and refreshments.
Overall a good experience with some general concerns for the horses mental and physical welfare and the evident lack of control/training when on the beach.
