点评:The old water mill is one of the main sights in Lower Slaughter.
There has been a mill on this site since almost forever. We know that there was a mill here as far back as 1086 because there’a a record of one in the Doomsday Book. However what you see here today is relatively ‘new’. It’s only about 200 years old and was built in the 19th century.
Right up until 1958, it was a working mill, producing flour. A giant, still-working waterwheel turns slowly at the side of the mill.
Today the mill houses a local museum, a small gift-shop and a cafe. Sadly for us, these were all temporarily shut because of renovation work. I'm not sure when they are due to re-open.
The very short walk from St Mary’s Parish Church to the mill is one of the prettiest walks in the Cotswolds. We followed the River Eye (more a small stream than a river) past the old town well, the village hall, and the gorgeous Cotswold stone, honey-coloured cottages that line the path to the mill. The pocket-sized gardens were full of spring flowers, ducks swam in the water and the banks of the river were lined with reeds and wildflowers.
NOTE: We walked to Lower Slaughter from Stow-on-the-Wold but if you are driving, be aware that there’s no village car park. You can park for free on the roadside opposite the Slaughters Manor House (although when we were there in summer it was full)
