点评:My wife and I went on a Farewell Spit Eco Tour on Friday 7 February. We ledt at 8:30 and returned at 3 pm. Our driver was Alan Marsh who entertained us with anecdotes and historical and ecological insights for the whole tour.
The day was pretty nigh perfect with a light breeze, clear skies and a warm but not scorching hot temperature.
We observed plenty of bird life from god wits to white-fronted and Caspian terns to kōtuku (white herons) to gannets. There were plenty of fur seals and remains of whales washed up on the beach.
We visited the Farewell Spit lighthouse and one of the keepers' houses, ran down a big sandhill and visited the gannet colony before heading out to Cape Farewell.
It was a marvellous day but one that is impossible to capture adequately in words. The whole was truly greater than the sum of the parts.
Iwe will remember the day with great fondness for the rest of our lives.
