点评:Three of us had an amazing day with Ben in two tin mines in the Cot Valley near St Just. Wheal Hermon is an ancient mine, and Bellan was worked until the 1940's.
We range in age from seventy to thirty five, and in experience from none to fully trained caver.
Ben had prepared both locations to ensure that we were absolutely safe throughout, yet were challenged in different ways. He coaxed us oldies to do things we never though we would; abseiling, traversing, wading through water in an adit, then finally climbing a flexible caving ladder.
Ben is extremely knowledgeable about Cornish mining, having spent countless hours researching in books, maps, and documents in the public records office, and popping down holes in the ground whenever time allows.
He was able to explain in detail how the mines were worked, and the minerals they contained.
Perhaps the highlight was extinguishing our head torches, sitting underground and experiencing complete darkness and silence.
He then lit candles for us, as the miners would have used, which lit our way back to the mine entrance.
We ended the day buzzing with exhileration; tired, but glad we had risen to the challenges he set us.
Have a go; it is great!
