点评：This place is a must stop for anyone interested in the incredibly rich heritage of jewelry making in Morocco. This is not just like any jewelry shop, this is an artisanal center where you can actually watch the intricate process of making beautiful pieces of art. The master artisans, guided by the wonderful leadership of Mr. Yassine or Maalem (master) Yassine as he deserves to be called, are on site crafting new pieces and cleaning and polishing older pieces to make sure they always look their best. I went there with my students from a university in the USA about a week ago. Everyone at the center welcomed us and made us feel at home. They showed us different types of jewelry and took their time to explain the differences they also taught us how to train our eyes to recognize regional styles. The center also has a display room/shop where visitors can purchase pieces they like. We were very enthusiastically invited to browse, ask as many questions as we wanted; we were also reminded that no purchase is necessary. It was wonderful to be in a place where my students and I were safe from any pressure to make a purchase. The display room felt more like a museum giftshop than a shop in the heart of the city.
About two years ago on a similar visit one of my students lost the earing she bought at the center. She thought she had left it on a chair at a table she she had tea not far from the center. As soon as i learned this, I called the center. Maalem Yassine answered the call and assured me they will check to see if it was still there and that if they were to find it they would figure out a way to get it to us in our hotel in Marrackech. They could not find the lost piece but they did send a replacement piece.
Maalem Yassine is a wonderful leader at the helm of a fantastic little institution. I wish them all the success in the world. The one negative thing I can think of mentioning here is that the place is a bit small and at times it is hard to navigate your way around the visitors and the display cases. I really wish the center had more space to grow. But whatever Centre De La Bijouterie Artisanale Maalem Ali 1908 lacks in physical space, it more than makes up for it with its big heart and welcoming attitude.
