点评:Yufuin No Mori train - which means, "Forest train to Yufuin", is a sightseeing train meant to bring you up to the Yufuin mountain town via the scenic/ 'forest-y' route. Both ways are available for reservation i.e. Hakata-Yufuin and Yufuin-Hakata. Though many also reviewed that a normal train uses the same route to go up.
So what's so cool about this train compared to a normal train?
1) All about the merch:
- You can get exclusive Yufuin No Mori train merch e.g. magnets, towels, toy trains, key chains, etc. You can either get the merch from the "buffet train car" shop itself, or better-managed trains will have their train crew push these products down the aisles in a cart for you to purchase them without having to leave your seats.
2) Kinda about the view:
- Yes, you get the same views on the normal train BUT this train is apparently slightly raised for better views, it will slow down and the captain/ train hostesses will announce the special sights for you. For example, on the way up, they'll slow down and announce in both Japanese and English, saying "turn right to see the Jion-no-taki Falls, after passing Amagase station". Funny thing happened to us on the way back though - the announcements for all the sights actually came few minutes late, AFTER we passed the sights. Maybe they thought nobody really cares about the sights on the way back.
3) Probably for the foodies:
- You can get exclusive Yufuin No Mori bentos, Milch puddings (you could get them at their store at Yufuin town itself but expect long queues), Yuzu soda, Yufuin beer, etc.
4) SIMPLY A COOLER TRAIN
- Train enthusiasts will love that all the carts (four or five carts - short train this is) on the Yufuin No Mori are different. Some are classier, some are not. You get to walk all the way up to the front and back of the trains, appreciate the different interior designs, and they have clear glass heads and tails for you to see the train driver, front and back of the railway tracks. Also, all Yufuin No Mori trains have the train captain's uniforms for kids to dress up. On our way up, one of the carts is a "cafe cart" where one can take scenic shots in front of the full-glass windows. Sadly, this "cafe cart" weren't attached to the train on our way back.
If the above points are what you love (callin' all train fans!), you won't mind paying.
Most tourists find it complicated to get the tickets, here's how to navigate that:
1) In order to travel around this region, you might have gotten one of the four types i.e. JR Kyushu, JR Kyushu West, JR North Kyushu or JR West pass. However, Yufuin No Mori train ticket is ONLY free to get under the first three types of passes.
2) In order to ensure that you definitely get a seat (or seats for your entire family), do note that reservations for the tickets start exactly ONE MONTH BEFORE i.e. 9am Japan time on JR Kyushu and JR West websites. So for those who want to have the peace of mind of definitely getting the tickets, you'll have to pay online and thus, your JR pass will not cover the costs of these tickets (WHAT? WHY? See next point).
3) The only way to get your JR pass to cover the costs of the Yufuin No Mori tickets is to book them using the machines at the JR offices at the stations. However, do note that you may or may not be able to get the tickets by the time you get to the machines, since they are so limited i.e. only four carts worth of seats.
Really up to you if you wanna reserve online (and pay separately, ON TOP of the JR passes) to ensure you definitely get the tickets, or gamble with your chances by checking the availability only when you visit the JR offices (this works better if you arrive many days before your intended day to take the Yufuin No Mori train). Also since we are FOMO (fear-of-missing-out) for our super-peak Christmas day tickets, we just went ahead to reserve and pay for our tickets online. About 40usd/seat. The normal train tickets are a lot cheaper, if not free, using the correct JR passes.
In summary - for Japanese systems - plan ahead; pay premium if you want assurance - there's a price for everything, including peace of mind.
