How to do Kruger, deja vu

点评：It's been 10 years since the outstanding article by Sandmans on this subject and, on what may be my final visit to Kruger National Park, I experienced a self-drive day to top any other I (or my brother who is Johannesburg-based and travels to Kruger or one of the other Southern African game reserves practically monthly) have ever seen.
My point is that, for those uninitiated visitors willing to bravely take the plunge into self-driving, or the hardened repeat visitors logging their 50th visit, this is the way to see Kruger Park.
Without going through the blow by blow account of the trip, suffice it to say that, on our last day, having already seen 4 of the Big Five (I prefer the Magnificent Seven, which adds cheetah and wild dog), we saw, in our 5 hour morning drive, 13 lions on the road, rhino and calf, elephant, more (maybe 5) lions, next to or on the road, large leopard in a tree next to the road clearly visible, cheetah (not clear view - just heads and ears). On the way back to camp after a picnic breakfast we saw wild dog about 200m away in a river bed but clearly visible and also some notable birds and raptors.
On the 2 hour evening drive we saw a large female white rhino that practically grazed our front bumper and, under 3 km from camp and 10 minutes until gate closing, a large male leopard walking nonchalantly down the middle of the road, paying no attention to us at all and close enough to stroke (and be bitten) 1 m from the driver's door.
Of the Big Five, we only missed Cape buffalo on that day - we had seen several hundred earlier in the week.
This amazing day was the climax of an unbelievably successful week in the Kruger Park. It exceeded expectations and the final day could hardly have been scripted by any wild life documentary producer. It is indelibly engraved in our memories.
