点评:Surprisingly good museum and one that focuses on the pilots, who were sent on kamakize missions, many of whom were never to return. The museum is modern and is made of up several areas inside and outside of the main building.
Inside the reception hall you have a short introduction about the significance of Chiran in regard to its intended purpose and historical context of the Pacific War before it moves onto the own thoughts and words of the pilots themselves in regard to home, family and what they thought of death. It's very moving listening to each one as you come to realise many of them were just boys.
Small display cases show personal objects such as written messages, wills, sake bottles and so forth are dotted round the exhibition space to help illustrate. The audio guide is well worth it as it explains this all in English and selected other languages as the main information boards are mostly in Japanese. The museum is well lit and modern, with a cinema screening room showing testimonies from surviving veterans (this was all in Japanese including the subtitles).
The site is also well preserved and worth exploring, as it has lodging showing what accommodation was like for pilots at the airfield. There is also a cemetery and temple of worship at the site which is worth exploring and showing respect towards. There is also a small shop in the reception hall which sells some books and small aviation souvenirs.
I recommend showing up at the museum early on the first bus out of Kagoshima, you will avoid the crowds at the time you arrive (weekend only) and means you can explore the grounds first which is most peaceful, as I believe it was intended to be.
