Growing up as a privileged "white-boy" during the NAT's Apartheid Era, the Cape Flats was not my hood and anything between Athlone power station and Somerset West, left and right of the N2 was the great, dangerous unknown.
Today's tour with Aunty Nita, in terms of moments of impact upon me as a South African, ranks on a level with my first visit to the iconic Robben Island. As a South African who is still making sense of the first half if my life under Apartheid, I cannot recommend this tour (and the Gatsby) highly enough!
Hearing the stories of hope amongst the violence and politically inflicted poverty on the Flats and seeing the impact First Community Resource Centre (of HanOVER Park) and RLabs (of Mitchells Plain) and others are having - only a few of the many stories of hope - is truly humbling and massively encouraging.
Thank you, Aunty Nita, for sharing your passion and igniting our hearts with fresh fire to see this beautiful, troubled city's story told and it's wounds healed!
