One of Many Sculptures Along North Terrace

点评：The bronze bust of Sir Thomas Mellis Napier (1882 - 1976) is one of six sculptures that stand together in a group on North Terrace. They are clustered in a small garden bed of cycads and represent famous South Australians.
Sir Thomas Mellis Napier held more than the usual number of leading positions. A plaque on the plinth below, lists his many roles and achievements. Not only was he Lieutenant-Governor of South Australia (1942 - 1973), but at various times he was also Judge of the Supreme Court (1924 -1967), Chief Justice (1942 - 1967) and Chancellor of University of Adelaide (1948 - 1961).
One might have expected the sculpture to show Sir Thomas in a judge’s wig but he isn’t even wearing a hat. He is bare-headed and could be almost anyone. Apparently Sir Thomas was not a stickler for the stuffier rules and conventions that normally applied to judges in his day. At the time, judges traditionally wore top hats on the street and were not usually seen eating, drinking or smoking in public alongside the masses. However Sir Thomas had a more relaxed attitude towards such social expectations and perhaps the statue captures that.
The bust is the work of artist John Dowie (who himself has bust a little further down nearer the SA Museum).
