点评:The life-size bronze statue of Dame Roma Mitchell (1913 - 2000), is one of a string of statues and monuments that are spread out along North Terrace. She is in good company as they all represent high-achieving, famous South Australians.
Roma Mitchell was an absolute powerhouse. She was a judge and state governor but more than that, she was Australia’s first female judge, first female Queen’s Counsel, first female university chancellor and first female State Governor.
She is shown here in quite a relaxed pose, seated and reading a book. She has her thumb marking her page while she gazes out to her right, as if lost in thought. A pile of books sits at her feet and loose leaves flutter around her feet. It is quite a humble pose for someone who has such a list of achievements.
She is wearing casual clothes and sensible shoes and could be almost any woman, reading any book. In reality, she is probably reading some high-powered legal document and not the latest Liane Moriarty.
The sculpture is the work of Sculptor Janette Moore.
