点评:Saturday 18th January we walked along this narrow single lane tunnel, in both directions.
There is no pavement along the tunnel so it is a case of navigating through alongside the traffic.
The tunnel was constructed in 1894 by the British, it runs for three hundred and fifty feet under ground, Fort George literally sits on top of it. The tunnel was named in honour of the Island's Governor, Sir Walter Sendall.
It is almost arch shaped with a high point of nine feet but restricted to seven feet for vehicles. This can be problematic for some of today's larger scale abd wider vehicles. When safe to do so, take a look at the walls and ceiling to see the evidence of where vehicles and the tunnel have collided.
The tunnel links Melville Street to Monkton Street and connects the east side and west side of the town of St George’s, from the Carnage to the Esplanade.
The Melville Street entrance is a short way from the Edplande Shopping Mall, it has it's name and date of construction above the entrance. Close by this entrance there is some interesting wall art.
The Monkton Street entrance also has the name above it but also has the height restrictions. There is an information board, giving details about the tunnel, mostly repeated above, on a wall at the entrance.
Using the Tunnel to get from one side of the town to the other, is a lot easier than walking up and down dome very steep hilly streets.
Not everyone would consider the tunnel interesting or worth walking through. We enjoyed it, something very different and an enjoyable experience.
Monkton Street
