点评:The Pen Museum is located in Frederick Street which is in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.
It is around three quarters of a mile on foot from New Street station.
It traces the history of steel pen nib production in Birmingham where at one time, 75% of world’s nibs were made.
The likes of John Mitchell, Joseph Gillott and Josiah Mason employed an army of primarily women and children to produce the nibs which replaced the old quills from the 19th century onwards.
The advent of the biro in the 1940s saw the eventual demise of the industry.
Lots of interesting displays on show plus the opportunity to try out your calligraphy skills.
The highlight for me was knowledgeable guide Larry giving us the opportunity to create nibs ourselves using a six stage process.
I paid £6.95 admission (over 65). Half price of you have an Art Fund card.
The museum is open from Thursday to Sunday.
