Once in a lifetime visit to a living monument
General Sherman Tree的点评
点评：We absolutely loved our trip to see General Sherman. We had our children (15 and 10) who also really enjoyed it.
A few tips worth knowing before your visit:
Weather- It is not as warm up at Sherman as it is down further in elevation. This seems like a given but the temperature variation can be dramatic. Our trip, it dropped 20 degrees! We needed our hoodies.
Driving- We visited in May and encountered some ice. The road serpentines from 3000 ft to over 7000ft in elevation. The corners are tight and the edges are steep. You can cause an accident if you don't savvy up with the road. While we saw RVs and larger campers, know they don't fit well on the roadway and at times were using the oncoming lane and pushing us off the road. Add in ice, and you're pushing it if you bring large vehicles up this path. The park recommends nothing over 22ft.
Also, if you are still learning the road, pull off on the designated stations to let faster traffic move by. It's mountain courtesy and you will make friends instead of enemies if you are mindful of other drivers.
Altitude! If you're like us and from a flat state with no elevation, the altitude hits different. This grove sits at over 7000 feet. There is a long slope leading down the tree trail. It's not terrible going down, but up is another beast if you aren't used to it. Our son had asthma and needed his inhaler. Take breaks going back up to the parking lot if you aren't Altitude adjusted.
Photos- General Sherman is one famous tree. The line gets long for the photo next to the sign. If you don't want to wait, go to the opposite side of the tree. You'll know it's Sherman, so if you can live without the sign, do it. Also try the panoramic trick- set the phone to panoramic and take a vertical panorama. It's a great way to get all of the size in.
This is an incredible learning opportunity. Take your time in the grove and read the signs.
