An Unexpected Treat

点评：Others have written of the specific sights and sounds and tastes of our 2025 tour of Sicily with John Graham Tours. I won’t repeat those details, but I did want to write of how special this tour was. I joined at the last minute - some friends told me of a cancellation on a Saturday, I spoke to John via FaceTime that day, went online to buy airline tickets that evening, and three days later I was on a plane to Sicily.
Despite the unexpectedness of the trip, I took comfort in the fact that pretty much everyone else on the tour had traveled with John before (some multiple times), and they all expressed great faith in his ability to make a trip interesting, meaningful, and fun. Their faith was well founded because the trip was all that and more. We were given a sense of Sicily as a physical place in the world and through time. We learned about the people who came as conquerors but then became Sicilian, as those before them had done. We talked of the various plants brought by the Greeks (e.g, olives) or Arabs (e.g., citrus) or Spanish (e.g., prickly pear/nopal) that are now ubiquitous in the landscape and cuisine (must admit I feel especial gratitude to whoever is responsible for gelato). We were introduced to craftsmen, musicians, and a Duchesa. We wandered through hillside villages and seaside towns. I opened the window in my last hotel room only to be stunned by a magnificent view of Mt Etna.
Can’t leave a review without talking about those who made the trip so special. John worked with several Sicilian guides whose deep knowledge of people, places, and things enriched the tour. We learned so much yet never felt talked down to or lectured at - it was always an interactive experience. John, of course, gets credit for bringing everyone together. I would definitely do another John Graham Tour.
