点评:For the last 225 years since its first development, Beacon Hill has been one of the most prestigious and expensive neighborhoods in the city. Located between the Charles River and the former hill summit adjacent to the current Massachusetts State House, the neighborhood is lined by beautiful townhomes.
Ironically, Beacon Hill was a marginal area in colonial Boston that was mostly undeveloped due to the steepness of the hill that was used as the city beacon for sailors. Due to it out of the way location, it was an area for activities that were more marginal, like a red-light district during colonial times.
However, shortly after independence, the city needed to grow and part of that was new State House which would be built near the old summit. The hill was lowered 58 feet, about 40%, and then used to level the area around it for streets and development. The new area close to the State House was soon in great demand for the nicest, newest and largest homes in Boston.
I had to the chance to walk through the Beacon Hill area one morning on Mt. Vernon, Chestnut and Beacon Streets to see places like the private park at Louisburg Square and the Boston Common and Massachusetts State House. The homes were historic many boot scrapes next to door for the days of horse and carriage. There are historic homes to visit here; however, I simply enjoyed a morning walk that I recommend as a great way to see the neighborhood. Finally, you may be in the heart of urban Boston; however, on my walk in the around the neighborhood, I saw a number of wild turkeys, surreal.
