点评:This week was the first time we had visited since pre-Covid, which is our mistake especially since we are very local. It is easy to lookup online of what is here and how, when and why it was created. However for TripAdvisor it’s the practicalities that are more useful to review.
When you arrive, head for the smaller reception hut rather than the shop (with the grand sculpture outside) which we did by mistake, (it does look like the entrance). Once inside we went for a stroll around the grounds, where ordinary footwear was adequate and the areas that are possibly unsuitable for some to navigate are well signposted.
The costs of entry to Leonardslee is not prohibitive, but do remember that parking is an extra cost if staying beyond 45 minutes. There are ample car bays, but do download the RingGo parking app to your mobile phone in advance, rather than have to mess around sorting it out when you arrive.
The gardens are amazing and even though I am not a keen gardener, I appreciated the sights and smells that assault you as you wander through the grounds. Remember to pick up the free map as you enter so as not to get lost (and of course tale your camera with you).
We had lovely coffees and cake at the Clocktower Cafe. Here you can sit inside or out and enjoy a choice of food and beverages, whilst browsing on the free WiFi which is available. Of course there is a (massive) well stocked shop, which sells a wide variety of items along with the wine from their own vineyard on the estate.
The Sculpture Park set in the gardens is visually engrossing. This ‘Walk of Life’ exhibition gives an alternative opportunity to view the artwork in the open. Don’t forget that Leonardslee is dog friendly, so they will enjoy the stroll as well. Everywhere you go the staff are friendly and chatty, helping you with information.
Our only disappoint was the wallaby feeding experience. For us it had been one of the reasons we had returned after so long. At the appointed time the two keepers arrived and deposited bowls of food on the ground just above their house. The view for the spectators was through a thick fence near the vineyard. This was a real shame, especially as Leonardslee appears to have built a special viewing pen a little bit further away. Here they have created to a wonderful viewing area which wasn’t used. What with this and the non-communication from the keepers to the visitors, it failed to be educational, educational, or special in anyway. What a shame. !
Still the gardens are well worth a visit, especially if you like your flowers and flora !
