点评:Hirosaki is about an hour's drive from Aomori and it hosts a very large Sakura festival. We visited about two weeks before the cherry trees were in bloom (and thankfully missed the million-odd visitors!!!). Got a combined ticket to the castle park and the botanic gardens. The castle is currently moved 'inland' on the park so that the walls can be strengthened so it was fascinating seeing that work. The castle is only 3 stories but was lovely to get into, with some exhibits, and easy climbs to the top floor. Small gift shop with a good selection of items. The park itself was really nice, with amazing views of snow-covered Mt Iwaki ("Baby Fuji"), easy to walk around. You could also walk around and see the guard towers on the corners. People were setting up for the festival to come but I feel we were lucky to miss that. The blossoms would be stunning but crowds wouldn't let you get good views. The gardens were definitely asleep! They are better viewed a bit later than mid April! Being mid-April, before the festival, very few people about so no wait times and could get great non-people photos!
