点评:We visited the Delaware Art Museum as part of a trip to view area attractions that included the nearby and great Longwood Gardens.
The Delaware Art Museum is in a residential neighborhood in Wilmington. We had no trouble finding convenient street parking, and the building fits well into the setting.
The museum is known primarily for two things, its Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood art and the work of some iconic American illustrators who worked in the Delaware area.
The museum is well-designed and most works have helpful explanations.
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was a group of romantic English artists from the mid-1800s. The artists included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, whose work is here. You've seen their art countless times, often in fantasy or literary realms. Perhaps the most famous work (it hangs in the Tate Gallery in London, not here) is that by John Everett Mills of a drowning Ophelia. The works are characterized by great detail and often have themes based on legends and literature.
Two or three galleries are devoted to Pre-Raphaelite work. These include works by Rossetti, but also lesser-known artists. Among our favorites was a broach that depicted an octopus and a mermaid and a dramatic stained glass window of a Viking ship.
Most of the rest of the museum is dedicated to American art, usually from artists working in Delaware and the Brandywine Valley. These include a great deal by Howard Pyle, an illustrator who pretty much created our modern image of a pirate. Frank Earle Schoonover also has multiple illustration works on display. You will definitely recognize the style of these works and many of the images themselves, which appeared on book covers and magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post.
N.C. Wyeth's work was also influenced by Pyle, and a handful of his paintings are also on display.
They have one Edward Hopper painting entitled "Summertime" that doesn't quite fit in with the other works other than that it is by an American painter from the same general period, but it is enjoyable and a nice addition.
One minor annoyance is the politically correct content they seem to have added throughout the museum.
There is also a medium-sized sculpture garden in the back behind the museum, which would be worthwhile to visit on a nice day.
This is a very good regional museum that is generally well-curated and easy to visit.
