点评:Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes and the symbol of Kagoshima. The volcano smokes constantly, and minor eruptions often take place multiple times per day which does not seem to bother the locals. Sakurajima has three main peaks, the southern volcano is most active; no one is permitted within 2 Km of the peaks. The island is located in the middle of Kagoshima Bay and is accessible by a ferry.
Before a powerful eruption in 1914, Sakurajima used to be an island in the bay, but the massive lava flow from that eruption created the volcano's current land connection to the Osumi Peninsula in the east. We took at ferry that runs the 3.5 kilometers between Kagoshima Port and the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal, taking 10 minutes.
Kagoshima bay was formed by a volcanic eruption 29,000 years ago and the Island of Sakurajima was formed 26,000 years ago. We headed to the observatory on an old lava field. The island which is now well settled and has many satsuma farms. The lava field of Taisho Lava in 1914 had solidified but very little still grows on it except Japanese black pine and Japanese pampas grass grow well. We walked up to the observatory, quite a step hill with several steps, a footpath has been made to take you through the lave field.
Although 4000 residents live a ‘normal’ life at the foot of the volcano, there are evacuation plans for them at special ports against a large eruption which have happened once in a hundred years. On the alluvial soil radishes grow to super-size. Sakurajima daikon radishes hold Guinness world record for size and weight – 70lb.
There is a visitor centre and souvenir shops which have delicacies made from the daikon radishes. Both worth a visit and a taste.
