点评:Having been to Green-Wood Cemetery on other visits, I was determined to see the other splendid old dowager of cemeteries, this time in The Bronx.
As luck had it, I managed to win a spot on a tour during Open House NY weekend, for a Saturday afternoon. How more perfect could it get?
I took the train up, enjoying the views of Yankee Stadium on the way. The grounds of the cemetery were in the middle of foliage color changing, which for me (I'm from the land of the palm tree and oranges) was an added treat.
Like its Brooklyn counterpart, Woodlawn is massive. Our tour barely scratched the surface, but we still managed to see the mausoleums of the famous, the infamous, and plain old ordinary folk. Everything was framed by brilliant autumn color, which made for a great afternoon out. And there were squirrels everywhere, plus an occasional rabbit or two.
If you like a beautiful necropolis, you'll love Woodlawn!
