St Mary's Minster Church, Stow的点评
点评：Everyone has heard of Lincoln Cathedral but few people have heard of Stow Minster, which is older than the Cathedral. A few miles north of Lincoln, this predates Lincoln Cathedral. The building dates from the C11th and it still has the original tall narrow Saxon tower and a Saxon doorway in the north transept.
Most of the building is Norman with its dog tooth carving around the doors and windows. It is typical example of the massive and solid Norman architecture. If you like Norman architecture, you will LOVE Stow!
There are so many hidden gems to discover
• Viking ship graffiti on the right hand wall of the chancel
• Green man carving on the font
• Remains of wall painting in the north transept
• The two wonderful carved heads on wall of the north transept
• The C17th bell ringers rules on the wall behind the organ and covered with a curtain
• The grave slabs on the chancel floor
• Medieval cared pews ends on the left side of the nave (watch out for the raised step into the pews designed to stop draughts!
The local photographic group were looking for ideas of a day out with their cameras and I suggested Stow. It was a big hit with everyone and we found plenty to photograph. The Cross Keys pub next door does very good meals too!
