点评:I missed the camellias, azaleas and only a few irises were left in bloom, so I was delighted to take the “behind the scenes” tour led by Molly. The tour shows secret spaces, like the attic, basement, linen and lampshades closets and other concealed spots not offered on the regular tour of Longue Vue House. Molly has extensive knowledge of the Stern family and how husband and wife Edgar and Edith, and the landscape designer Ellen Shipman planned the home and gardens, and for the estate to become open for the community. Molly answered every question with well-researched answers. The behind-the-scenes house tour was the highlight of my visit. However, I still enjoyed strolling through the gardens, chatting with the gardeners, and marveling at the idea of this pristine, secretive garden bordered by a canal and a major roadway, nestled within a secluded neighborhood. I enjoyed the dancing waters in the formal garden, where green trimmed hedges create patterns reminiscent of Elizabethan knot gardens. I also enjoyed the Discovery Gardens with some unique plants and landscape art. The landscape gardener was friendly and knowledgeable when I asked the identity of some vegetables. Entering Longue Vue can be tricky. Enter on Bamboo Road – look for the tall bamboo rather than the sign – then wind through the towering bamboos along a narrow road. Parking is included in the admission price. Ask about the senior discount for admission.
