点评:We took the JR Main Line to the Kakegawa sta and 掛川城 is a mere 8 minutes walk on the north side.
Kakegawa Castle is located at a small hill in the center of Kakegawa, and the location is a strategic post station of the Tokai region on the Tōkaidō highway connecting Kyoto with Edo (Tokyo)! First established in the late-15 century by Katsutoyo Yamauvhi (find the stature within the area.)
The castle ground is quite large and being end-March there are some early cheery blossom while the rest are budding still. The crowd pours in gradually as the weather was a good 10 deg w breeze. It takes quite some upslope stairs before reaching the Castle tower. As most castles we visited the stairs inside the castle are narrow and steep, tactically to prevent enemies from easily attacking the castle interior. There were actually 4 floors even though from the exterior one can see only 3! At various floors there are exhibits related to the castle history. From the top floor of the castle, one can not only enjoy a panoramic view of Kakegawa City. A local guide shared that depending on the weather we may even catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji. Good panoramic view indeed.
Within the castle ground is the Goten, a Museum and a Tea House. Our tickets allow us to visit the Goden too. And do drop by the souvenir shop. On the way back we dropped by the Sakagawa river side and chill there for a drink/snacks at the place called Kodawarippa. Locals parked their cars at the shopfronts and it was really a great scene to see the enjoying of early Hanami
The site of Kakegawa Castle was listed as No. 42 of the 100 Fine Castles of Japan by the Japan Castle Foundation, in great part due to its historical significance.
Glad we visited it, and that’s castle #19 for us..
