Highly Symbolic WWI War Memorial

点评：The Boy David Memorial is one of several military/war monuments clustered together in Hyde Park Corner.
It commemorates the 62,000+ officers and men of the Machine Gun Corps who died or were wounded, missing or taken as a prisoner of war.
It’s an odd memorial. Unlike the Royal Artillery Regiment Memorial which stands almost next to it, there is little about it that captures the brutal realities of war. The Royal Artillery Regiment Memorial features an enormous stone Howitzer gun and has a figure of a dead soldier lying covered by a tarp. In contrast, the Boy David Memorial features a nude statue of a slender young man who looks more like an idealised ancient Greek youth. He stands on an Olympic-style podium and could be an athlete about to receive a medal, not an ordinary soldier fighting the enemy from mud-soaked trenches.
The figure references David, the biblical hero who stood up against Goliath, the Philistine giant, and felled him using just a slingshot. It’s heavy symbolism that idealises the soldier and war. To our modern eyes, it has little in common with the appalling realities of war and death.
