Cruel and depressing treatment of animals
横滨八景岛海岛乐园的点评
点评：I have no idea how so many people go here and feel anything but horror at the horrendous treatment of the animals here. Hakkejima has a good reputation compared to many other Japanese aquaria and zoos because of all the money it has, but there is absolutely no work being done here to further conservation or education and zero regard for animal welfare.
River otters are kept in enclosed concrete cages with no running water and are sometimes separated from their families. Red pandas are sealed inside of plastic tubes and left to pace endlessly for hours. Multiple mammals look malnourished and stressed, with thin bodies and patchy, raggedy fur. Dolphins and beluga whales are forced to perform four demanding shows per day. Many other animals, like arapaima, capybaras, flamingoes, pelicans, polar bears, walruses, and tortoises are left in tiny enclosures barely big enough for them to move a little and barely wide enough for them to turn around.
As if that's not bad enough, Hakkejima Sea Paradise actively engages in sea floor trawling. For the uninitiated, this refers to the practice of running a giant net along the ocean floor, destroying habitats and ensnaring many animals that the fishing vessels are not trying to catch. It's illegal in many countries, yet Hakkejima sends out specialists on fishing vessels to sort through what they dig up and send the most interesting specimens to the aquarium. The aquarium as a result has gotten its hands on many deep-sea creatures that it isn't properly fit to display — of the several deep-sea goblin sharks the aquarium acquired via sea floor trawling, none of them have survived longer than three weeks in captivity.
Do not go here. Do not subject yourself to this miserable excuse for entertainment. Do not use your tourism dollars to support this greedy animal cruelty farm.
