点评:First off, if you're near Mainz and want to check out the local wine scene Jerome is your man. A great host with a wealth of knowledge and for those of us no sprechen de Deutsch, don't worry, his English is excellent.
I happened to be visiting in mid-January, which is easily the least favorable time of year to do just about anything that doesn't involve snow. Regardless, my thoughts immediately turned to the fact that I was smack in the middle of some of the most famous wine regions of Germany and in spite of my unfortunate timing, Jerome went out of his way to create a fantastic journey around the Rheinhessen region surrounding Mainz for a first hand look (and taste) of this unique viticultural area.
We visited a small, 'garagiste' wine making team experimenting with regional varietals in a subterranean cellar that looked to be carved from the medieval ages, and a village winery with centuries of tradition passed from generation to generation kind enough to host us in their living room while their winter renovations took place. From there we traveled over the hills that extend south from Mainz along the Rhine to another small winery, tucked away along one of the many winding roads lined with traditional timbered homes, specializing in Pinot Noir and Frühburgunder. Our last stop was a modern cellar overlooking rolling limestone covered hillsides draped in vineyards featuring an array of wines both local and from their sister winery in the Mosel.
Anyone looking to fill their personal cellar would be hard pressed to find better bang for your buck. Gorgeous, expressive wines with moderate alcohol levels and crisp minerality can easily be found for single digits and Jerome has all the knowledge and expertise to guide you on this journey. I can't recommend BottleStops enough ~ prost!
