点评:We arrived at Lakeview Park in the early afternoon on a relaxing, sunny summer day. The parking lots were easily accessible from both Perry Street (Route 163) on the north and Ash Street on the west! Plenty of parking spots were available for us! At first, we sat on a rustic wooden bench with quaintly twisted boards!! After brushing away a few mayflies, well-known locally for their abundance, and avoiding an item or two left by a bird, we sat down to enjoy the view of scenic Lake Erie obscured by a brick wall in front of the beach. The majestic Davis-Besse nuclear power plant, one of only two nuclear power plants in Ohio, stands tall and proud in nearby Oak Harbour, with picturesque plumes of what one would hope is radiation-free steam ascending heavenward! The Jet Express ferry can be seen transporting thrilled sight-seers quickly back and forth between Port Clinton and Put-In-Bay. To avoid sea sickness it may be helpful to limit your alcohol consumption before you board. Of course, if you do feel a little queasy you can always lean over the rail and let things take care of themselves! After a while, we got up to investigate a little flower garden located on the northwest corner of the park. Most notable is a statue of a little girl walking two dogs and carrying an American flag! The girl, with an anxious smile and worried brows, has become tangled in the dogs' leashes. The flag may very well have been added by a visitor. Nonetheless, the statue provokes thoughts in us such as “what does this mean?”, “who decided to put this here?” and “why did they put it here?” The garden also houses a painted-rock exchange! My companion and I had never heard of such a thing before and were completely delighted with it. Imagine being able to trade painted rocks with complete strangers! Next, we noticed what appeared to be a gathering of Amish sitting in a pavilion, enjoying a delicious homemade meal with each other. Although we had a strong desire to interrupt their quiet commune and learn more about their fascinating culture, we did not! They didn’t look like they would have been comfortable with such an intrusion, especially the men, who were pretty big!!! After this, we thought about crossing Route 163 to check out the beach, but we remembered what Keith B of Wayne, Michigan had written: “the water is a bit murky.” Since both of us have a fairly low murk tolerance we decided to pass on that and head for a much-needed visit to the restroom facilities! On the way, we were fortunate enough to get a glimpse of beach haute couture. A dazzling beach enthusiast sporting faded camouflage shorts, a leopard skin print shirt, white athletic socks, and grayish off-brand shoes was making a scene by the crosswalk signal. The restroom facilities were the sole low point of our visit. If I were to rate them on their own they would be getting 2.5 stars out of 5 possible. I don’t want to cavil, but I will say that the toilet seats in the men’s bathroom could have been cleaner and the sinks in the women’s bathroom were clogged with mayflies, wriggling in their death throes or dead!!! Located within easy walking distance from the toilets a free library box bursting with contemporary novels, books on CD, and some inspiring religious pamphlets for those having a crisis of faith. Also worth noting are Mickey’s Smoke Shop (with Beer Cave) and a popular playground. The smoke shop is not in fact a part of the park but is conveniently located to the east of the park for anyone needing a quick butt or a cool brew! The playground we did not visit. We drove past it on our way out. But, I did see plenty of kids enjoying the monkey bars and a miniature version of the impressive Port Clinton Lighthouse! I hope this review has been helpful and will encourage people to visit Lakeview Park!!!
