点评：One of the most beautiful features of Palmer House Hilton hotel, is the main second-floor reception lobby, designed by architects Holabird & Roche, and built in 1923-1925. Nowadays, Palmer House Hilton Historic Lobby is considered one of the finest public interior spaces in Chicago.
Architecturally, the lobby is striking: it has a 50 ft (15.2 m) high by 28 ft (8.5 m) wide ceiling, which is made up of 21 pieces of artwork, completed in Paris by Louis (Pierre) Rigal. The walls of the lobby are cladded in beige and green marble, stunning light fixtures are cast in bronze, and the ceiling is ornamented with paintings in a Neo-Classical style. Between the piers of the lobby there are corridors, that encircle the lobby on the second and mezzanine floors.
Beyond the circulation corridor, the lobby has marble-topped tables and velvet seating in comfortable armchairs; there are various retail display cases, and escalators -- on the south side of the lobby.
A flight of stairs in the lobby leads up to The Empire Room, which was built as the main dining room, and from 1932 till 1976 it was used as a night club. Many famous entertainers appeared in The Empire Room: Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Liberace, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Harry Belafonte, Sony and Cher, Liza Minnelli, Tony Bennett, Jerry Lewis, and many others. Nowadays, the Empire Room is used for conferences and meetings.
These days, the lobby looks very modern and chic: there's a very exquisitely designed, modern bar there, serving guests and visitors of the hotel. The seating area is well-appointed for the comfort of visitors. As one can see from the photos, the lobby is very busy during the holiday season, and the center point of this grand architectural masterpiece is now a tall, lavishly adorned Christmas tree: a very festive ambiance!
