点评:After finding this museum on Trip Advisor, it was my top priority to visit in Georgetown. Traveling in Guyana is very personal - individual humans go out of their way to create a beautiful experience for visitors and share their love of Guyana. This museum is one of the best ways to see and feel that. Roy Geddes is a treasure. At 85 years old, he is retired from touring the world with his band, the Silver Tones, and now dedicates his life and home to sharing his passion for steel pan music. He talked about the history of steel pan, particularly in Guyana, and he walked us through how steel pan drums are made and tuned. The heat treatment of the steel, and its coating in Ni or Cr, was especially interesting to me as a metallurgist - so we even talked a bit about my work and research. He played for us, then taught us how to play a few chords.
Roy Geddes and his wife, Pam, invest their time in maintaining and caring for their museum, home, and yard. The colors and art are no less vibrant today than in the photos here from several years ago - so despite the constant sun-bleaching and humidity, he keeps everything impeccably presentable. His thoughtfulness and care is reflected in the wrods of wisdom on his walls - which ring true no matter where in the world you come from. He believes that if everyone dedicates themselves to their passions, they will become better humans, more respectful citizens, and more educated about the world around them.
Do not miss this museum. It is endlessly more unique and personal than looking at city landmarks, and it probably won't be around forever. The practical:
* He charges $10 USD per person, and $15 for a Silver Tones CD. I feel this is a bargain because there's no "middle man", and you're directly supporting the person who is opening his home and heart to visitors.
* There is parking on the street if you have a rental car, but he'll also call a cab for you. Neighborhood reasonably safe.
* Unsure of the actual hours, we went on a Thursday around 3:30 pm (somewhere I saw a 5:00 "closing" time).
