点评:I have wanted to do a safari since I was a kid: having the chance to observe the animals in their natural habitat is such a blessing. So, when we discovered that the owner of the hotel where we were staying offers safari tours, following the good impression we got from the hotel, we decided to trust him and to join a full day tour.
And we made an excellent decision !
Tharindu Gihan and his driver came to pick us up at the hotel before dawn, he explained us that we would beat the crowd to enter in the national park and will be able to increase our sightings. To be honest, while we were waiting to go in the park, I started to manage my expectations: this is not a zoo, animal encounters are not guaranteed, but I'll for sure have the thrill to get lost in nature, seeking for wildlife and maybe have the chance to spot animals where they belong. We finally enter the park and so the "hunt" begins, the sun is rising as we progress in this majestic landscape and we already start to spot some peacocks, water buffalos, spotted deers and even an elephant. A bit further, near a waterpoint we can observe some jackals, I am fascinated to witness the wild so active in the early hours of the day and my excitation grows up as Gihan explain us that this is one of the best time of the day to see wildlife: before the heat, noise and dust from all the other safari jeeps, ect... he also says that we are now "hunting" leopards. I am skeptical but all of a sudden, Gihan asks his driver to stop and to backtrack; several jeeps are passing us and I have been staring at the forest edge the whole time without spotting anything, what's going on? Gihan is clearly excited, he asks the driver to park and stop the engine, grab his camera and then indicate us one tree, about 20 meters from us: there it is, a huge feline, starring right at us, hidding in the branches. I can't believe it! I grab my phone and start to shoot, photos, videos, but the quality is bad as the leopard is too far. Lucky us, I can ear Gihan shooting with his camera too, he tells us that he will share the pictures with us in the following days. Within the two first hours or our Safari, and thanks to Gihan and his driver we managed to spot more animals than I was expecting (including a leopard couple not long after the first one). It's because of Gihan's knowledge of the park, experience of wildlife and efficient communication with his driver that we had the chance to observe so many animals. They are working so efficiently together and Gihan has the time to exchange with us too, feeding us information and tips about the wildlife unlike other safari jeeps that we saw with customers on the back and driver/guide in the jeep's cabin. Lunch was provided in a lovely sandy area with a little stream and lots of cheeky monkeys, we also had the opportunity to discuss further with Gihan and he explained us that he is one of the only five licensed guides active in the park! The afternoon was as exciting as the morning as we were mainly "hunting" for elephants this time and again thanks to Gihan and his expertise we managed to beat the crowd to a very close encounter with a family of five. Time flew really fast and we arrived in the last hour in the park: when the weather cools down, meaning it's the final rush as lots of animals are more active: we encounter elephants, water buffalos, a sloth bear and her cub, spotted dear, crocs and lastly again a leopard and this within this last hour, what a festival! After some last pictures by the sign entrance we made our way back to the hotel and came the time of goodbyes with Gihan and his driver. After this experience, I will leave Tissamaharama with found memories of all the animals I had the chance to encounter but also of Tharindu Gihan, his kindness, passion and love for the wildlife. If you want to do a guided safari in Yala, don't go further: Gihan is the man!
