点评：Here’s an interesting activity for young and old to do… Zig Zag Railway. They have heritage trains hauled by steam locomotives, restored and maintained in immaculate condition. Trains runs are on Friday, Saturday and Sunday on a fortnightly basis. We booked our tickets online for the 10.30am departure but you need to be at Clarence Station 45 minutes prior to scheduled departure – there’s plenty of things to do, while you’re waiting for your train to arrive. But first, you need to check-in at the gift store, to exchange your online tickets with paper tickets – which you get to keep as a commemorative / souvenir tickets – just like the good old days and then staff will come on board the train and paper-punch a hole through your ticket. There’s plenty of free parking and bathroom facilities available and it’s wheelchair accessible, train inclusive. While waiting for your train’s arrival, there is a Container Café onsite, offering hot food; cold food (sandwiches); sweet and savoury biscuits / slices; and hot and cold drinks – but only opened when the Zig Zag trains are operating. There is a stationary carriage not too far from the café, where you can enjoy your lunch or snacks inside the carriage or if it’s weather related, you can simply stay inside for shelter – pretty clever idea. They also have picnic area to enjoy your lunch/snacks. There’s also a cute little gift shop opened to bring home a piece of memory. Unfortunately, they do not accept cash – it’s contactless payments only. You will get the best views, seated on the side of the train, that is on the platform side when boarding the train – plenty of photo opportunities of the escarpment of the Blue Mountains. Food and drinks are permitted on the train. The duration of the train ride is 90 minutes, inclusive of three stops, where you can hop off and stretch your legs and/or take photos or simply remain seated – the train stops for approximately 10 minutes. The three stops are necessary as the locomotive needs to change ends as it Zigs and Zags its way up and down the mountain and of course to top the train up with water – a very thirsty train. Friendly staff explains the process and equipment used, when topping the train up with water – a fun experience to watch, especially the train enthusiasts. The first stop is ‘Top Points’, followed by ‘Bottom Points’ and then back to ‘Top Points’ and end your journey back where you started, at Clarence Station. We were the lucky ones that day, because when we boarded the train, it wasn’t overcrowded but when we returned, there were a lot of people waiting to board the next train ride. Perhaps the first train ride of the day is a better option to board, just to avoid being overcrowded? All station buildings include wheelchair/stroller accessible facilities. You need to inform staff in advance, so they can plan / cater to your needs, when boarding the train. I believe all Station Masters and staff are volunteers and are super friendly, approachable and very helpful – always with a welcoming smile on their faces. Although we had an amazing experience, I thought I should explain why I have given a 4/5 star rating and that is, not accepting cash payments – I like the freedom to choose payment options and I also have elderly parents who do not own a mobile phone or credit cards. Totally a fun experience for young families but an exciting day out for young and old – I highly recommend this activity.
