点评:We spent a wonderful week at beautiful Viani Bay Resort, and diving and snorkelling with the fabulous team at Dive Academy Fiji. This place is genuinely special - gorgeous location, world-class diving, comfortable accommodation, delicious meals, and a demonstrable commitment to sustainability, cultural sensitivity, and community.
The booking process was effortless (thank you Marina!) and numerous follow-up questions about diving, snorkelling, and all manner of details where answered quickly and patiently. Marina and Jone literally built the place with their own hands, and employ all their staff from the four local villages on the bay. As a long-time Fiji 'local' I can attest to the genuineness of their commitment to their community - you can see it and feel it in the respectful relationships between them and the staff.
The food was superb. Lot of fresh fish (of course!) and vegetables grown in their own gardens. Plenty of options for vegetarians, pescatarians (me!), and meat eaters. All prepared with local expertise and care. And topped off with Jone's own Fiji Sea Salt, made on site in flavours too many to list!
The diving was brilliant. The highlight was the Great White Wall but every site was special. Short boat rides in one of three small fast boats, usually returning to the resort for the surface interval because the distance to the Rainbow Reef is so small: they are easily the closest operator to the reef (much closer than those on Taveuni). Divers may have read about the supposed 'time slots' being the only times the Great White Wall is diveable. This seems to based more on the schedules and distances required by more distant operators to make the trip worthwhile - no such problem from Viani Bay, where the site is 15 minutes away and diveable almost any day depending on tides and currents. Marina and the dive crew know the reef like the back of their hands and I was able to make two dives on the wall in one day - the second a spectacularly colourful night dive.
The dive guides are very competent and knowledgeable (many trained by Marina) - safety-conscious, great spotters, but unobtrusive and happy to let experienced divers dive their own dive. As mentioned on their website, there really are a maximum of four divers on a boat - several of my dives were just me and the dive guide - bliss! I used my own gear, but the rental gear appeared current and well maintained.
My wife is a non-diver, but keen snorkeler and usually came with me on the same boat with a dedicated snorkel guide either on the spots we were diving or nearby. We also enjoyed a morning snorkelling with their (local) resident marine biologist who is supervising their coral farming and community conservation projects. Most places these days trumpet their 'eco credentials' and 'social responsibility'. These guys are just quietly doing it - they're the real deal.
I'm looking forward to the next opportunity to get back there and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic, special Fiji dive experience.
