点评:We have recently spent 14 days in this beautiful area of the Netherlands. Although we have spent many holidays in the Netherlands, this was our first visit to this area. We stayed at the Europarcs De Utrechtse Heurvelrug, Maarn in a cabin/lodge.
In this review I will write about our accommodation and about the area.
Firstly, our cabin/lodge was of the highest standard in a well appointed position. Well equipped and very comfortable. We were glad of the outside space which was very attractive with well cared for patio furniture. (We were fortunate enough to have very warm and dry weather!). There was a well equipped kitchen with oven, hob, dishwasher, kettle and coffee maker. Plenty of crockery and glassware. The shower provided plenty of hot water and had good water pressure.
UK travellers need to be aware that the pillows provided are bigger than those found in the UK meaning that if you take your own bedlinen, the pillowcases may be a problem.
We arrived after the reception area was closed for the day but the key collection arrangements were easy with a map of where to find the accommodation. We were required to take our passport to reception the following morning. Personally, I didn't find the reception staff very friendly and a lack of English made some information difficult to achieve. Two things which created a slight problem because of this was the location of the refuse collection area and how to exit the swimming pool complex! (no English notice once inside the pool)
The pool complex was very attractive with an area for small children, a single depth pool for swimming and a flume. During our stay, the pool was quiet and most enjoyable. The pool isn't attended thus pool rules weren't always adhered to.
The 'mini market' on site was poorly stocked and was closed when we arrived. There was no assistance in knowing how to get supplies when the site office was closed. The mini market didn't have staples such as fresh milk.
A five minute cycle or 15 minutes walk takes you to the local village of Maarn. Here you will find a selection of shops with a Plus supermarket which is very good. A market is held here on Tuesday mornings. You can also get a train from here into Utrecht and runs half-hourly. The journey takes 18 minutes by Sprinter and Utrecht Station provides easy access to the City.
Close to the entrance of the Europarc is Henschotermeer, a unique recreational area in the middle of the forest. A swimming lake and large stretch of beach. There is a charge to visit this site.
It should be noted that whilst we were at this Europarcs, a large amount of building expansion was taking place and we felt that the units were being placed much closer together and may not be as attractively landscaped. For this reason, we are unlikely to return.
I will now write about some of the great places to visit. I have already made reference to Utrecht. This university city is a great place to visit. Plenty of places to dine or just to sit and have a drink whilst soaking up the atmosphere. A shoppers paradise with independent and chain stores. Visit on a Saturday morning and it's worth walking through the Flower Market. You will find a large Stoffenmarkt on Breedstraat where you will find stall after stall of fabric at bargain prices.
For those with young children, a visit to Nijntje Museum is recommended (affectionately known as Miffy to us Brits!)
Do venture away from the main high streets where you will find pretty buildings and individual shops.
Amersfoort was an easy bike ride taking about 55 minutes to reach the centre. Take a wander beside the canal and see the Koppelpoort. Amersfoort is the birthplace of the artist Piet Mondriaan and you can visit the museum here.
Closer to the Europarc are plenty of hiking paths and cycle paths through the forest. Visit the Pyramid of Austerlitz. The only one on European soil!
Other places that are easily accessible either by car or for those who wish to cycle a little further are: Spakenburg, Wijk bij Duurstede, Amerongen. The final home of the abdicated Kiser Wilhelm II at Huis Doorn.
I recommend a trip to the Theehuis Rhijnauwen near Utrecht. Here you can enjoy a pannenkoek and a drink beside the river.
Ice-cream is readily available in the Netherlands and they have some amazing flavours. a double scoop will cost you €3.80 much cheaper than here in the UK.
Our favourite lunchtime snacks are bitterbollen, kaastengles and Kroketten.
