点评:This was part of an included excursion on a Viking river cruise on the Danube. We docked at Vidin and took a 1 hr bus ride to the site. None of the roads in Bulgaria are in great shape, so driving anywhere takes time. At one point, 250 millions years ago, this site was at the bottom of the oceans, so limestone sediments and other detritus got packed on the ocean floor, and was eroded away as the ocean retreated. The result is similar to the Badlands in South Dakota. It is located on a hillside overlooking the town below. Thankfully, the bus dropped us right by the entrance, not requiring us to walk another 300 meters uphill. The site is easily accessed on foot, but beware, it is sharply uphill. I am not in the best of shape, and had to stop several times. You think you’ve made it to the top, only to find several more sets of (sketchy) stairs. Once on top, though, you are treated to a panoramic view of the valley and it’s surroundings. OSHA would have a field day with this place, as there are few safety measures to speak of. Plus, the steps, being made of limestone sediment, are eroded into barely useful footholds. If you are not very fit, I would question your decision to climb very high. A pretty cool site, with enough parking for 20-30 cars. On the wild chance that you’re in that particular neck of the woods in Bulgaria, definitely go set it…..but don’t drive 50 miles out of your way to visit…..unless you’re really into rocks. Recommended.
