Walking in the New Forest in winter has its attractions, but cycling can be better as it generally gets you from one cold place to another more quickly.
Admittedly, this emporium is in fact the only bicycle hire shop in the area but, even if there were others, it would be the naturally best choice. As the name suggests, the business includes a small café selling the usual range of hot and cold drinks, savoury and sweet morsels, and offers you a chance for a final warming before setting forth. It is a useful diversification from just being a cycle hire centre.
The café is where your initial conversation with the guys about what would be the most appropriate bikes can take place. Once decided, you go to the adjacent part of the shop and try out the bikes. You will be guided at every step as the guys are very concerned for your comfort and safety. Then, once astride and ready to pedal with all adjustments made by the concerned staff (‘the guys’), you can take further advantage of their local knowledge and be advised on the routes to take.
During the discussion, the subject of a visit to a local pub was raised and proved to be a worthwhile destination.
A bike’s worth of local knowledge is always valuable.
