点评:Great historical recreation of a Russian-era fort. Much information can be learned from the visitor's center but we were lucky enough to get there when a group tour was leaving. Well-worth the extra $15 each to have a guide bring to life the history of this area and the fort. Plus, with the tour, the guide was able to unlock buildings usually closed to the general public. For me- and I believe for many visitors, nothing in our American History books touches on the fact that Russians settled in northern California. To protect the fur trade and to keep the Spanish from advancing from the south with their mission-settlements, the Russians lived in this area and maintained a peaceful and respectful relationship with the Native Americans and the Native Alaskan tribes. This contrasted greatly with the mission push which enslaved the tribes and taking their land, their culture and their lives.
