点评:This is a bit of a distant memory for me, but in the early 1980's (sorry about the misleading date, but the choices were limited and I really wanted to share the experience) the USS Mississippi (CGN-40) pulled into Gaeta, Italy. As I was getting off of the ship for liberty, I was curious about what was on the mountain peak in the distance. Somehow I learned that it was Monte Redentore and that it was a scenic mountain hike. I mentioned to my shipmate and friend Jack Harris that I wanted to climb that mountain to see what it was. His response was "Let's go!" We took a train to Formia, stayed the night in a hotel and started out the next morning. It took us quite a while to reach the peak, but we were still quite young (early 20's). I would strongly suggest packing water and some snacks. The trail was well marked with very obvious switchbacks to follow. The view from the top was fantastic (and even a bit scary). At the peak we found a large religious statue holding a cross. Jack handled the trip very well, but I got a bit wobbly on the way down the mountain. I was famished when we found a restaurant in Gaeta that opened a bit earlier than the others. So, it's well worth the trip. Take some light provisions, stick to the trail and enjoy the view.
