点评:Fabulous smallish museum with some great art in the collection and a wonderful building.
The museum is very focused on European painting from about 1300 to about 1940; there are some sculptures but the museum doesn’t have drawings or decorative arts or tapestries. The European collection is housed in the wonderful original building by Louis Kahn and it is gorgeous. My favorite paintings were the great Boucher set, the lovely and big Claude and the spectacular group portrait by Frans Hals. Not all of the paintings are on this level of splendor and there are a few paintings that show signs of name shopping (the “Michelangelo” painting that the public treated with so much reverence the day I visited seemed really out of place). All things considered, it’s the best collection of European paintings in the region by far.
The new building across the lawn is by Renzo Piano and it is a major let-down after the Kahn building. The art on display is still first rate: African, ancient meso-American, and some East and south Asian sculpture and paintings that are mostly Japanese. The quality of the art is very high in general, but these galleries tucked away in corners of the building make the museum seem like a bit of a hodgepodge. But who cares. This is the best museum in the Dallas metro area.
