Challenging Drive with Scenic Coastal Views
Highway Route 340的点评
点评：Driving along the northern section of the west coast of Maui offers remote and spectacular coastal scenery. Hwy 30 becomes a scenic and winding road after leaving Kapalua. The road is in good shape through here as it passes by Slaughterhouse Beach and Honolua Bay. However, it transitions into Rte 340 also known as the Kahekili Hwy. It remains a reasonably easy drive until passing the Nakalele Blowhole. After that point, it becomes a narrower and treacherous drive with no shoulder or guardrails and steep drop offs. It is best to be traveling east or clockwise when making this drive so that you are on the inside and not feeling like you are about to go off the road and roll down the cliff. Absolutely no driving at night or when it's raining heavily, and visibility is poor. The scenic Ohai Loop Trail can be found through this section. However, the road just gets even worse as you near the village of Kahakuloa. It becomes a single lane and approaching cars will force one to reverse to the last cut out which can be yards down the road so that the other car can pass. This is truly a backwater section of the island and locals are not fond of tourists and clearly made it be known. I'm an adventurous sort and have driven roads in the rural areas of Ireland and the UK and all over the Caribbean including Jamaica, Antigua and Tobago. However, this was by far the most challenging and stressful road that I have ever encountered. You need to be a confident driver and have loads of patience to drive through here. It made the drive on the Road to Hana look easy. I'm not sure if the scenery through this section is worth it to put yourself through all this unless you are just interested in the challenge. I'm glad that I did it but I wouldn't want to drive it again.
