The shortest climb to the 10th tallest mountain....
Single Tree Hill的点评
点评：Single Tree Hill is the 10th tallest mountain in Sri Lanka and is right in the heart of the Nuwara Eliya town. The google map directions are accurate. There is a temple on the way to the summit. Upto the this temple, the road, running through the Pedro tea Estate, is wide enough for two SUVs to pass and is in very good conditon. There is ample parking at the temple. (Things might be different on a poya day when the temple has devotees.)
From the temple, there is a wide gravel road up to the summit, which is in terrible conditon, even a tuk won't offer to take you up..The summit is not too far, but due to the slight but continous ascent and the hard gravel road, it took us about 30 minutes to get to the top. The summit will be a bit of an anti climax. There are some telecom towers at the top, so the area is fenced off. Plus there is no view due to the shrubs. And..... there is no "single tree";)
We were told by a seasoned hiker, that there is a path from this summit to Shanthipura. But we couldnt find it and there were no sign boards.
When we visited last year Oct- Nov, there was a strong mist, so there was absolutely no view from anywhere. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the weather and the short hike.
This year we visited again in October and there was a very clear view of the Nuwara Eliya town and the surrounding areas from the temple and on the way up through the tea estate.
While we had a good time hiking, I would say the experience was "average" unless you consider climbing the 10th tallest mountain in Sri Lanka as a bucket list item. And the temple too may not warrant a visit on its own as it is still partly constructed. (Also construction seems to have come to a standstill from last year to this year).
But if you are already in Nuwara Eliya and bored at the hotel or wants to burn some extra calories gained from the hotel food, as was the case for us, this is an ideal short excursion;)
