点评:Amazing trip with magical views and landscapes. On the way up to Inuvik (and from there further up to Tuktoyaktuk on the road which officially is not Dempster hwy anymore) the weather was sunny and dry. No rain meant more dust. The road is wide, wider then Dalton hwy in Alaska and most of the time smooth(ish). It winds through Tombstone TP, beautifully picturesque tundra with lot's of wild berries to pick, many creeks and lakes. I filled up the tank at its beginning, then at Eagle Plains and Inuvik. I drove a standard sized Kia Forte (not a 4x4). I drove from Dawson City and it took me about 14 hours to get to Inuvik (next day morning) but I stopped many times. I did a small hike at Arctic circle sign (amazingly, no bugs/mosquitoes), had a tea at Eagle Plains motel. I stopped to take many photos and mini hikes. The scenery is just too beautiful not to have breaks and the sunny day was idyllic. The day seemed to never end, darkness kicked in way after 22:00. The temps went down from 15 degs C in Dawson to around 5-7 degs C in Inuvik/Tuktoyaktuk.
There were many ptarmigans along the way and some foxes. I didn't see too many trucks, which surprised me. I also saw some car wrecks and a burning car on the road. The road requires full attention at all times. Its surface is hard but has holes and loose rocks. The ferries were great, didn't have to wait too much time, it all went smoothly, although the last one I took in darkness and seemed to have some issues but eventually we made it to the other side.
On the way back it was raining all the way to the Arctic circle and the road surface was like a sloshy mud river. Slippery and mud-dirty, a different way of driving, for sure. There are no sections of the road covered by asphalt or concrete at all, only few kilometers in Inuvik. It's a challenging drive but mostly when wet. But full attention is required at all times, especially when on-coming traffic throws stones at the windshield. Be prepared to get some scratches and chips.
