点评:This was a very worthwhile visit, the excavated remains of the Roman city of Lucentum. An easy few minutes on the very efficient tram from the Alicante seafront (line 10, 1.45€ at the time of this review).
You can imagine the city as it once was, perched on a hill overlooking the sea, with the bath houses, shops, statues and villas shining in the sun. It’s not Pompeii, obviously, but there’s enough here to picture the street layouts. The walls of the buildings remain at a low level, so you can step across a two thousand year old threshold and feel the size of the rooms in the houses. One of the highlights is a mosaic.
It’s all very quiet and calm, with wild cats sunbathing amount the stones. The ruins were later used by the Moors as a burial ground. A shame the Spanish authorities allowed the building of the unsightly high rise flats between this site and the seafront, because there are more Roman remains down there and it would be nice to visit those with a direct route and enjoy the original view.
Toilets were very clean, staff were welcoming and the site was pretty accessible for wheelchairs or prams. It could be even better if the cafe had been open, but when we visited (February) it was closed. (We found nearby Albufereta was a bit grim, just a housing estate with a building site gravel beach and nowhere pleasant to eat and drink.) This is an hour well spent.
