点评:We had planned to visit the Etches Collection, but it was not open, so went on to Kimmeridge Bay. Not been here in a number decades, but was glad to see little has changed. Car Park was closed, but still able to park.
The path down to the bay is a little tricky and was amazed to see the sign that Fossil Collecting was prohibited. Kimmeridge Bay is one of the most prospective areas along the Jurassic Coast for fossils so someone is trying be a jobsworth.
The nature of the lithologies here have allowed the sea to erode numerous wave platforms of the harder limestone, which allows you to walk out and enjoy the fossils and take in the expanse of the bay.
There are plenty of fossils available in the rocks scattered about on the beach so you don't need to bang away at the cliffs to get some. This is what should be warned against. Best to take some picture and leave insitu for the sea to erode out.
Found Ammonites, Bivalves and Brachiopods with out a hammer. Great time and took me back to my student days.
The old nodding donkey of the Kimmeridge Oil Field was still working away. It reminded me of my time as a young Geologist spending a month on another on-shore well near Ditchling Beacon. I left for the Gulf before they finished, hoping that there was not a major field there as it was in one of those areas that the natural beauty surpassed the need for oil.
Kimmeridge Bay will always be a place to visit if you hunt for fossils. a great day out for young children to learn about nature.
