点评:Falmouth's "Knob", part of the Cornelia Carey Sanctuary just outside Woods Hole, is a narrow promontory of large boulders stretching out into Quissett Harbor and best known for it scenic view of Buzzards Bay. But having recently visited the site, I would say the real gem at this nature preserve is the small, admission-free, crescent shaped beach with its soft, clean sand and relatively warm water. No waves to surf here, just a lovely spot to sun oneself and wade into the clean salt water.
While many visitors to the area have heard of the Knob, it can be difficult to find. It is situated on Quissettt Harbor Road, a right hand turn located shortly before the approach to Woods Hole proper. A short drive on the harbor road brings one to the very limited parking area across from the entrance to the Cornelia Carey Sanctuary. Parking is free, but the marked spaces number only 10 with room for another five cars to squeeze in along the side of the road. We arrived around 11 am, saw no space available and drove to the beginning of a private, residents only road where we turned around, ready to give up on experiencing the Knob. However, luck was on our side and as we headed back toward Woods Hole a vehicle left, leaving us a legal parking spot.
The path out to the Knob is a short hike of just over a half mile through the wooded bird sanctuary. On our walk we were quite disappointed as the only birds we spotted were a handful of robins; no shore birds as had been promised in the literature we reviewed before our exursion. However, our disappointment was short-lived when we got to the point where the woods opened up to a beautiful view of Quissett Harbor, Buzzard's Bay and the famous Knob, straight ahead. We started out on the approximate quarter mile walk across the top of the boulders, but turned back as there were signs advising visitors to stay off the rocks. Apparently, not everyone takes the warning seriously as we spotted a few braver folks out at the end of the promontory.
As we turned to walk back to our car, on our left we discovered a set of stone stairs leading from our walking path down to a little beach below. Given what a warm sunny day it was, we were pleasantly surprised to find the small beach far from crowded. Perhaps the lack of a lifeguard and no food, beverage of comfort facilities discourages most folks from enjoying this little gem.
If you are planning to visit Woods Hole it is well worth a short side trip out Quissett Harbor Road and a visit to the Knob -- if you can find a parking space!
