Chichen Itza - SCAMMED at a parking lot in Playa del Carmen. LOW BUDGET HIGH PRICE tour.

We were so unfortunate to choose this company for our tour to Chichen itza. The entire tour was very unprofessional, but here are a few main points.
We got picked up at our hotel at 6:45 a little bit north of Playa del Carmen. The sales person had promised us it would take at most 3 hours each way, but after we had to pick up a few other guests with hotels far from the main road, we were not at Playa del Carmen before 8:00.
They had taken us to a random parking lot in Playa del Carmen, where we we had to make our payment. We were promised to pay 220 dollars for 2 persons for the Chichen Itza trip. We had asked our sales representative, if there would be any extra charge what so ever and he promised us we would not have to give anything else besides the 220 USD - at most 100 pesos for 2 life vests. However, due to some currency exchange we ended up having to pay 260 USD - almost 20 % extra. We tried complaining and even wrote to our sales representative, but they would not let us pay the 220 USD. Now what? we are stuck in a parking lot in Playa del Carmen surrounded by 10-15 from the company - we did NOT feel safe. Due to fear of being left behind or worse, we decided to pay and then take our complaints back to the sales representative the next day. In my opinion this is a huge scam, and I would not wish anyone to experience the same fear we had that day.
The experience in the morning ruined the trip for us, and we had a hard time enjoying the amazing Chichen Itza.
The rest of the trip was standard low budget tours. A few points that annoyed us:
- 40 minutes before we arrived to Chichen Itza the guide told us we could have a 20 minute break to go to the bathroom. At this point we had been in the bus for almost 3 hours, so another 40 minutes would not hurt - we would have preferred to go directly to Chichen Itza. It seemed everyone else on the bus was of the same opinion, as after 5 maybe 10 minutes everyone was back at the bus - except the guides, who were eating breakfast. We assume the break was mostly for them.. Due to the small detour, it probably took 30 minutes extra. We arrived at Chichen Itza 10:00 - 3½ hours after being picked up, although we were promised 3 hours.
- When we arrived at Chichen Itza we had another 30 minutes break since we had to wait for the guides. Poor planning. We started the tour at 10:30.
- The lunch was subpar compared to the other tours we have been on. There was a buffet, but the only thing worth eating was the tacos, which were hand made to the side of the buffet. In addition, the same company has many trips going at once, which means everyone will arrive at the different places almost at the same time. Our group was always on time, so we beat the other groups to the spots, but we could see the groups coming after us waiting in line 15-20 minutes for lunch.
- The co-driver couldve been replaced with a pamphlet. All he did was tell us when and where to meet. The guides ate lunch together separate from the tour group, so we did not get to talk or ask any questions during lunch. The guides also do not join for either Chichen Itza or the Cenote. The guide for Chichen Itza is an official guide.
- The Cenote was lovely as well, but we only had 1 hour including changing. We would have preferred an extra 30 minutes instead of the break before 40 minutes before Chichen Itza in the morning. It was again very crowded once all the groups arrived at the same time (again).. Why not go to different Cenotes.
- Only 40 minutes in Valladolid was also too short.
- The drive home was also horrible. The co-driver said "Let's go to Playa del Carmen", but in reality we skipped the road, that you have to pay for and took the free road that goes through Tulum. This meant an additional 30 minutes to the trip. Also, in the morning, there was 2 busses. 1 coming from north of Playa del Carmen and 1 from the south of Playa del Carmen. In the afternoon, we had to drive to ALL of the hotels. Since we came from north of Playa del Carmen, and we drove over Tulum, we were among the last to be set off. The first few people were set off at 19:15, which was almost 3 hours after we left Valladolid. Keep in mind Valladolid is 30-40 minutes closer to Playa del Carmen, than Chichen Itza. We had hoped for a 2- 2½ hour tour home, but we ended up with a 4 hour trip. This was obviously so they could save money on having the extra bus even though they KNEW it would cost us one and a half hour.
It was a terrible experience only saved by the beautiful Chichen Itza. I would choose taking a cab back and forth and pay the extra money, if I had to go again - or just pick another company.
